69 "Q" code ignition key replacement problem
« on: May 16, 2018, 01:13:19 pm »
My ignition key is so worn that it will not turn to the accessory position to allow removal for tumbler replacement.  Any suggestions ?  Thanks

Take it to a competent locksmith. Explain the problem. He can make you a key that will work. Then you'll be able to remove the cylinder. Basically you'll be having a single use key made.

Replacement factory switches and key sets are common .I have a bunch of NOS ones .Cheaper than a locksmith too .
had many 428 CJ and SCJ cars over the last 30 years.I currently own a 68 1/2 coupe and a 69 R code SCJ Coupe and a 70 R code SCJ Cougar Eliminator .I am looking for a 70 428 coupe if anybody knows of one for sale.

All locksmiths here are scared of it. If I can’t get it going I’ll contact you. Thanks for your response.

Even though the keys are double cut. Only one side is used. Don't go to a home center who only makes key copies. Go to a full service locksmith.
I use a place on the wrong side of town. Family run place, they're honest beyond belief. I've had them reset combos on my two large safes. No worries.
Only takes a few minutes. They put a blank in & turn it. Remove the key & use a triangle file to work the places where the pins hit the soft key material. Only need to get one side to work. Then use the key machine to put that profile on both sides. Might have a 2 key minimum.

That is some valuable information. I’ll have to weigh the cost. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise.

If I remember right, the factory stamped the key code on the back of the drivers door lock cylinder for the doors and ignition, and the glove box door lock cylinder for the trunk and glove box. If you still have the correct door lock you should be able to remove that lock and take it to a real lock smith and they can cut a new key from that.code.

Great tip.. I will have to look at mine on the 67 when I get it apart. I actually took my whole car to the locksmith and handed him the trunk lock(thank you fold down seat!) and he made one directly from the ignition tumbler still in the dash.

Decoder FA #s are door & ign  &  decoder FB #s  are glovebox & trunk.
