68.5 hood holes
« on: May 19, 2018, 03:12:46 pm »
Does anyone know what size holes are in a 68.5 hood for the scoop studs and the large hole size in the hood brace ( I think its only the back 2 that go through the brace )?

1/2 in diameter.

FWIW, the center fasteners were screws, not studs.

Man, you guys are fast. I borrowed a piece of a hood that was cut out of a junked 68.5 CJ. The holes measure .470 + or - .005. So you are both close to what I have. The holes have distorted edges ( from the nuts? Or from being punched? ). The opening also appears to have been cut with a nibbler ( does not look quite like it was punched with a die). Is that consistent from what you have? Not all having studs would explain why the scoop I have doesn't have seven studs. I thought the one bolt I got with the scoop was incorrect. Nine holes in hood for seven studs/bolts. Think they were working off a print for 69 scoops? Chris, you're saying the back three and the front extensions are the studded ones. Correct?
Thanks for the quick replies. This she and the people on it are the best.

After pulling the drawing I have and the 69 scoop ( for a different car), I have discovered that the holes for the 68.5 are a unique pattern and are nowhere near the 69 parts. Leave it to ford.

The Ford drawing for "1968 1/2 Mustang - 428 CID-4V" show the hole size to be 0.47-in dia and the larger hole if the middle rear of the hood to be 1.25-in diameter.

I haven't seen the drawing but I can tell you that the hole in the top of the hood at the center in the rear is roughly 5/16 dia.

The holes in the "frame" are 1.25 dia.

Thanks Chris. The piece of a hood I borrowed has that hole about 3/8". I cut the large opening today. Came out pretty good. I'm not crazy about using a hole saw on the frame, but don't see another way. Wish I could mount the hood to my milling machine. Would be a perfect hole then. Oh well.
