I think the "N" assembly plant was Norfolk. I believe it was producing pickup trucks for the 1968 model year, and the trucks didn't get 428s. Are you sure it's a 428 block?

I for one, would like to see the VIN and the C scratch, just for curiosity sake. I don't doubt what you saying but something just seems out of line. Maybe your misreading the VIN? If your up to some scrutiny you could post a picture or two.

     VIN, same here, I suspect that the plant letter is too funky or the stamp was worn out & a similar looking letter was substituted.

I will add the Norfolk because you have concrete evidence, thank you for pursuing Wes. Going to guess you have a 4.05 bore 391 block. See if it has the large distributor hole a also hole tapped on the side mold plate for the hydraulic relief drain back. You can order a Marti Report from the vin. Truck plant like Scott mentioned also B plant in Oakville Canada.

Its a 4.13 bore its not a 391.I just took standard bore 428 pistons out of it.Did the 391 have a c on back reinforced main webs 428 crank and standard bore 428 pistons.I think the block came out of a torino that was built in Atlanta.

OK, but it's going to be hard to explain why the block is marked with an "N" (Norfolk) in the partial VIN instead of "A" (Atlanta). Lorain (which was a Torino assembly plant) would be "H".  Your best bet if you want to be 100% sure is to get a report from Marti Auto Works.

I never thought that heavy trucks like the F700 and F800 were assembled at N plant but the stamp is clear Ford N character. I do know they made some of the 427 Galaxies including the lightweight 63's and went full truck line for 1967 with F100. It could very well be a mis stamp incorrect character error. Never know for certain and a guess for life at best without spending 40 bucks on a report. simple

Not all 391 blocks have 428 cores and jackets so not all had a C scratch 428 indicator. I suspect that not all 391 trucks had air compressors for brakes thus the mix. The dates on these blocks do not fit with the time line revisions for 428 blocks because 390 cores were mixed as well.

I also have a CJ block with an "N" stamp.  I have requested a Marti and will share results when I get it.  The "N" is clearly stamped.  Bore is standard at 4.13.  Has standard, factory 428CJ pistons, and original OEM standard main and rod bearings.  I don't think it's been apart since factory, but cannot guarantee.  It has all attributes of a CJ block.

Excellent I found one as well in my files. Jack did you get any other parts that could be considered original to the block? heads, intake, manifolds etc

Here is a 1970 N plant C6 Transmission. It is a R servo cast tail CJ variety. I suspect it is from a full size Police type. Perhaps the N is a big car FE plant 68-70. I will try to find the block pic here as well..

Well we know they made full size cars in 69/70. We know it was a truck plant as well in the late 60's. We know they never installed 428's in trucks. If Norfolk did not build F600 bigger trucks with 361/391 (C scratch) then the answer is 1968 Full size Galaxie by deductive reasoning.

Kerry, the motor was with my 7/15/68 CJ fastback when I bought in 2009.  Obviously not the born-with motor.  It had 390 GT heads and manifolds.  The CJ intake, distributor, water pump, brackets are all around May dates and probably from the born-with motor, but can't verify for fact.  I do believe that the pistons, rods, crank, and cam are original to this "N" block.  As I disassemble more, I will check and record the dates.

     Just checking. That was the conclusion I was coming up with. But sometimes there is a detour along the way that I miss taking.

The only cast iron CJ intake application was R code cars for 1968. The Aluminum PI intake was also installed at the same time on P code 428 Full size, W code GTE and GT500. We know N plant never produced 1968 R code cars therefore intake does not likely belong to block. The Cast Iron CJ intake was used for the 69 and 70 P code 428 Full size when the Q code was designated only to the Mustang/Cougar and midsize CJ cars.
If the heads were 14 bolt they were installed in a Mustang/Cougar or Mid size. Anyway all fun to calculate Jack and if it comes back a P code we can line up some other stuff I have on those engines. It could be that last month of 1968 was already dropping the Aluminum for Cast on P code assemblies.

Those 2 door Galaxies have huge doors and nice lines. The XL with the flip up headlights is especially cool.
This block was originally assembled with 8 bolt C8AE-H Heads, Log style exhaust manifolds, S casting 390 Iron Intake, 600 cfm Autolite carburetor.This car also had a starter delay relay and 15x6 Kelsey Wheels. I chased 68 Q and P cars specifically for their 68 CJ shared parts. Used to call on every one for sale in every city on Craigslist for years. Sometimes would coax them to part out for me or pull the engine. I have even just bought the wheels with the promise of putting something else back on lol. I gave a guy 500 bucks for a starter delay and he was so concerned it would no longer run. The blocks are treasure and I moved a lot of them. The N plant is going to be less production than say Z or J just by the scarcity of sightings.
