Wow, Marcus great stuff on complete system...

My 1970Mustang Convertible 351C is a Cali car and I tracked down a lot of missing parts the hard way couple years ago.

This stuff is a huge benefit for folks with one of these cars because a lot of that stuff is missing

Yeah its good to have this when looking for parts to put one these cars together.  I have a 70 Boss 302 that is from Galpin Ford so thats what got me wanting to do an article on this.

Excellent article, Marcus!  Very cool stuff :-)

I have a correction for you.  Cougar and Mustang did not use the same brackets for holding the tank vents.

If you compare the pics of your Mustang and my Cougar, you can see that the vertical mounts at the tail of the bracket are not present on the Cougar.  Also, the front edges are different, with the Cougar having more of a "hump" shape while the Mustang folds down promptly.  You can also see the ribbing on the plates are completely different.

Cougar also has another bracket that mounts to the upper rear of the rear vent tank, connecting it to the tail panel, presumably for stability.

You might also want to check on the fuel filler neck ~ I think Cougar is different than Mustang...  or I might be misrememberizing >.<

The "Fuel Return Line"... is a misleading name since it doesn't actually flow any fuel, and doesn't return it to the gas tank.  As you know, it brings the fuel vapor from the gas tank up to the charcoal canister for storage and subsequent burning in the engine.  There is also a hard line not described in the doc that comes from the Vent Valve all the way forward to just behind the shock tower, where a 2-3 foot section of rubber fuel line then brings the vapors to the charcoal canister.

The paper tubes can sometimes still be found on Amazon or eBay under:
Goodyear 65912 Carburetor Preheat/Emission Control Duct 3/4" dia, 36" long
*I did a quick search and found them on a few sites including Amazon and Summit racing, under Goodyear Continental Elite 65912.

Good comments Mike.

Yes, I did not add every single detail in here because it was just becoming too long.  I just wanted to really stick to the main visible items.

Gas tank filler necks between Mustang and Cougar are different...with or without CA emissions they are different.  But since I only had one of these NOS I just added the comment and picture for the Mustang filler neck.

For the expansion tank bracket I had someone send me a complete set from a Cougar so the bracket must have been wrong.  I see that in the photos and drawings.  Will need to look into that and find the part numbers.

Thanks for the comments.

Great article Marcos...except it showed that I had the 71-73 fuel vapor canister in my CA CJ. I obtained one from West Coast Classic Cougars and will restore and install this weekend. Thanks. Rick

Don't feel bad, I also threw away lots of smog stuff from my cars/parts stash back in the 1980s…
Kinda ironic, since I was just a dumb kid then and figured nobody wanted that 'junk'  lol
Boy, was I wrong!
