My car at Lions Drag Strip in LA.
« on: September 16, 2011, 11:55:16 am »
Rumors from a previous owner indicate that my 1970 SCJ Mach 1 spent some time at Lions Drag Strip. There are only about 3 years from Jan '70 when the car was new until December 1972 when the track closed that it could have raced there.  If anyone has pictures I would be interested in seeing them.  It is a loaded Calypso Coral 1970 Mach1 SCJ 4-speed.  Todd

       Todd ,
Help me/us out , who owned it back then? I was around there then but have to admit that  racer names are more familiar than car descriptions (to me anyway). I'll help you if I can,

Rumor also has it that the guy who raced it was the sherriff or a deputy. Sorry, no names.

Randy, very nice offer to help. What is the chance that one of the track photographers is still around or someone has a web site selling period photos? By chance do you remember the names of any of the photographers? Any chance National Dragster might have some archived. Lions was pretty popular in the day. Keep us posted on your search & good luck.

70mach, Good luck to you but I have been scouring the drag related websites looking for old pictures for 3 years and have turned up nothing. Even contacted Bob McClurg but nothing. My car ran at Lions and Orange County too and all I have ever unearthed is an article in Super Stock Drag Racing Illustrated about my car. Obviously thrilled about that but with the old sepia black and white picture you can hardly tell anything. The frustrating thing for me is the original owner of the car and the guy doing the driving, Tom Stafford, has promised me pictures and related info numerous times but still waiting....
