Hubert Platt's 1968 Super Stock Mustang
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:24:05 pm »
Both of these 1968 Mustangs were Hubert's. The one that Randy Payne is driving is the silver and black Foulger Ford Mustang that Hubert wrecked in Ga. Randy had it rebuilt and I bought it from Hubert in Nov. 1969. I believe it is the Mustang that Hubert raced at Pomona in 1968.

This is how it looked when I started racing it.

Later that year I had it painted

I raced it about a year and a half winning class at Pomona and setting two NHRA records with it.

Very cool pic's!  Thanks for sharing.  Do you still have the car or know where it is today?

How many '68s did Hubert have?  We know that there was at least one 4-speed car and one automatic at Pomona.  If the two in the pics are both 4-speeds did he have three '68s?

The one Hubert is driving is an automatic SS/EA and Randy is driving the 4 speed SS/E.

I am reasonably certain that we have identified the VINs for six cars driven by Hubert (two cars), Al Joniec, Jerry Harvey, Don Nicholson, and Gas Ronda.  I'm still working on a page to document the results of our research, but it's likely that we won't publicly identify all of the VINs because the location of both of Hubert's cars is still unknown and we don't want to facilitate creation of any fakes.  The other four are around so it may be possible to publish those VINs without risk.  Chris and I will talk more when I can get a little more written down.

I spoke with Rusty's then mechanic George Pils today (2-18-09) who fondly remembers the '68 car. He
was a little too short on time to fill me in about those days , but will at a later date.

I spoke withGeorge Pils again today. He verified that Rusty's car came from
Holman Moody Stroppe. He talked about aluminum front hubs and a lead filled rear
bumper . He still has the lead out of the bumper. Also how they'd purposley
leave obvious tech problems to keep the inspectors from finding the real cheater parts. Maybe Rusty can elaborate.

One of the things I would do is leave off the shock tower braces so they could find something wrong when I was going through tech.
I don't remember anything about lead in the bumper but it did have acid dipped front fenders and hood.
Back in the 70's you were allowed any size slick that would fit in the wheel well. One of the tricks on the 68 that I moved to my 69 was moving the springs in about 1/2". This is a picture of the springs on my 69 with 9" slicks. I could fit 12" slicks with the springs moved and the inner fender wheel well in the front modified. You also had to straighten out the indentation for the spare tire.

AWESOME pics! I have not been in here in awhile and love seeing old racing pics. There is a 68 428 CJ Mustang that races at the drag strip I run at. Napierville Dragway in Quebec. It is a nice looking car, white with the tear drop style hood and white steel wheels.
