69 Ford Drag Team Mustangs.. registered here?
« on: August 18, 2009, 02:01:33 am »
Ok guys, I need your help in locating the 69 Ford Drag Team Mustangs.. read carefully before responding.. check my info...

From what I know, there were 4 total- 2 match race cars(one white, one blue), and 2 stock class CJ cars(one white, one blue). The blue cars were the east coast, white cars were west coast. Jacky Jones has one of the blue cars and  IIRC, he told me he knew the whereabouts of the other blue car. These would have been the Hubert Platt/ Randy Payne cars. The white cars which were the Ed Terry/Dick Wood cars were both auctioned off a few years back and have seemed to disappear. I saved some pics from when they were auctioned and I think it was mentioned here.

There is some interest in making diecast replicas of one or more so I will be talking to Jacky soon and maybe he knows about the white cars, too.

Q 1. To Scott, are any registered here, especially the white ones? The vin numbers given in the auction info are on the Dearborn Flashback website.

Q 2. Anyone have first hand knowledge of any of the 4 cars current condition/whereabouts/owners/pics? Will need to clear with owners if diecast project is even going to get going.

Q 3. Any other significant 69 Mustang Machs or Sportsroofs I should recommend be done? I think Rusty Gillis white/red/blue car and McClellan "Cobrastang" should be considered prime examples. Too bad the Sandy Elliott Canadian 69 CJ is a coupe, not sure coupe tooling is in the cards.

I'm hoping to get the stock class blue car done as they are closer(less tooling differences) to the street car.
What do you guys think?
Thanks
-Jeff

URL, please?

These two: 9R02R110972, 9R02T178884?  I'll have to check on 9R02R110972, but I know that 9R02T178884 isn't registered - there doesn't appear to have been a 428 CJ in that car's racing history.

I recall a Folgers mustang , I think it was Lucky Lucy in 1969. The car was half blue and half white , ran around 11.65.

You're thinking of Lucy's Larceny.  It was blue/white, but not a drag team car.

Didn't both drag team cars sell at a BJ auction a few years ago? I remember the price being extreamly low, like 28K, they didn't run and had to be pushed on stage, both white cars.

        Jeff(CJJeff),
There werew at least 3 San Jose "T" code cars sent to Bill Stroppe's in Long Beach for conversion to Pro Stock, Platt,Terry, and Mickey Thompson (Larry "Butch" Leal driver) . While 2 are Drag Team cars, they were modified for
Cammer/Boss429 engines, so I don't know why they would be registered here. Each team also had a Torino CJ also done at Stroppe's. Jacky's car should be the "T" code, Pro Stocker. The Terry car supposedly sold at BJ's and hasn't been seen since. The M/T car was a "time capsul" and I last saw it at Mickey's old Long Beach shop around 1980. Not seen since. A friend of mine owns the ramp truck that hauled it and is interested in finding the car to complete the package.
Just a couple of pennies worth of info.
       Randy aka gt350hr

UPDATE    I had BAD information on the MT car in my notes it was/is  a very early Boss 429 car . NOT a T code. My apologies

9R02R110972 is indeed registered.  It was seen on eBay in 2003 being sold by someone from Montana.

Hubert Platts 69 match race car was converted to a prostock car for 70.Bob Perkins has it and is restoring right now and will be in the Ford display at Barret Jackson this January. He is doing his usual serious high quality work and painstaking run down of period correct parts  to get it right. The cammer engine was built by Ohio George Montgomery  .For some strange reason it will not be painted black or red to increase value ;D

Bob said that this car is "changing the standard that old drag cars are going to be restored to"?

THat's scary, how nice will it be?

Jacky's Hubert Platt car is perfect! It looks great, that would be a great car to have diecast made of.

Jeff,

How about that 135 car that I heard about that spun out at Tulsa this year, did you hear about that?

When I worked for Hubert after Indy in 1969 he had me drive his F-350 ramp truck and the match race car from Dallas to Atlanta by myself. I was never on the payroll Hubert just paid my expenses. I just started hanging around at Indy helping them and the next thing I know I was with the Ford Drag Team for a couple of months. He also had me drive the F-350 to Epping NH for a big Ford promotion at the track. Tasca was there with their 494 aluminum powered Boss 429 street car.

That Tangerine BOSS 9 was one bad car. It had a 494 CAN AM engine in it , ran high 10's when it could hook up! It was Bob Sr.'s toy.

The Ahole that bought Sandy Elliot LM said 20 years ago he would look it up in the records but never did after being asked several times. The place has changed hands twice since then.Unlikely any old stuff is still there.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! On both counts! I'm not sure they will produce 68's just because of how many Ertl did but I passed along all the requests along with photo links.
Not sure how difficult it would be to tool a coupe from a 69 fastback but I'm trying. I told them there are alot of 69 coupe CJ's here which would in turn allow a racer or 2!
Thanks for the help!

Hello,

Does anyone know anything about this car (9R01Q123554)?

After the first wave of  Mustang Cobra Jets swept NHRA Super Stock in 1968, Damone-Venturi Racing, comprised of singer-actor Vic Damone and golfer Ken Venturi, teamed with Mustang creator (and Damone’s brother-in-law) Lee Iacocca to create a notchback variant based on the new 1969 model. While most Ford racers ran the flashy new Mach 1, Iacocca knew that the 200-pound-lighter Cobra Jet-equipped coupe was quicker, so he ordered one delivered to Ford race prep specialists Holman Moody-Stroppe. Damone-Venturi successfully ran the Bill Stroppe-prepared car in 1969, in the process demonstrating the Mustang coupe’s competitiveness.

Today the Damone-Venturi SS/E Mustang Cobra Jet is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, with an authenticated 5,000 miles on the odometer. It is equipped with a correct date-coded and matching numbers 428CJ engine and special-ratio Cobra Jet 4-speed. The interior is completely original and in as-raced condition, including both the column-mounted and in-dash gauge panels and three-point roll bar. The White exterior is finished with a Flat Black Mach 1-style Shaker hood and the car still has its collection of sponsorship logos. Highly original and in full race configuration, the car was recently shown in the Competition class at the Forest Grove, Oregon Concours d’Elegance.

A letter from Bill Stroppe himself documenting the vehicle and serial number is included in the sale of this vehicle. With a known history involving a long list of famous names, this one of a kind Mustang Cobra Jet coupe is an important part of Ford's racing heritage, with all the credentials to make it an ideal addition to any serious performance Ford collection.

Highlights:

- Date coded matching numbers 1969 428/335 HP Cobra Jet V8 engine & Cobra Jet 4-speed transmission
- Interior is completely original & the exterior still has its collection of sponsorship logos
- Traction Lok rear axle
- Heavy duty suspension
- Front disc brakes
- Documentary letter from original preparer Bill Stroppe

Thanks,

Allan

The notchback was owned by a good friend of mine Fred Jones for a long time. It recently sold at RM in Monterey. It's a beautilful period car. I don't recall any significant race history like national event wins or magazine exposure. It has all the modifications made to the Drag Team cars.

     Allan,
Fred has an occupation that can keep him out of the country for long periods of time. I haven't heard from him in about 7 months so he must be on "assignment". I will take note and see if I can get him to contact you. It was my understanding he got the car from Damone when the two were on the same golf course in Northern Ca long ago.

The notchback was owned by a good friend of mine Fred Jones for a long time. It recently sold at RM in Monterey. It's a beautilful period car. I don't recall any significant race history like national event wins or magazine exposure. It has all the modifications made to the Drag Team cars.
     Randy

I wasn't around then but just in going through all my old magazines I had never run across it or any mention of it. Probably was not too successful but no big deal, lots of local or regional CJ's that did not get alot of ink. At least it's a step up from my car with Holman Moody Stroppe modifications. It is a neat cat no doubt...

I ran all the NHRA national events in 1970 and all but Englishtown in 1971 & 1972 and I don't recall ever seeing that coupe race.

Hello- I am familiar with your car and have been for some time. When I first got my car 10-11 years ago, I started collecting any old SSDI, Hot Rod, Pop Hot Rodding and any other 67 to 74 magazines with Mustang articles and one of the first ones I ran across had your car in it doing a wheelie! I then found the other website when a previous owner started the restoration. Great car and history, I have been on Sam's website.. think I have posted something in the guest book there. I have his 71 Mustang diecast too! Maybe you can bring it to Tulsa next June? I saw the MM article, I think I got an extra copy!!

I planned on sending pics to my diecast guy, only thing is that your car is pretty far removed from a street 69 and they try and maximize their tooling dollars. We will try though!
Thanks
-Jeff

I was recently glancing through the Nov 08 Hemmings Muscle Machines and in the auction results section saw where the White Damone/Venturi CJ Coupe you guys were discussing brought $67,100. Seems kind of low to me but maybe no drag car collectors there that day..

Restarting this topic to see what we have in new information that might be captured in the next edition of the registry book...

So can anyone come up with summary of the VINs of the 4 1969 Drag Team Mustangs? Here's what I think we have:

9F02R110972 (west coast CJ, http://www.boss302.com/smf/index.php?topic=36125.0)
This one may have been misidentified as 9R02R110972 on page 1 of this thread.

9R02T178884 (west coast SOHC 427)

We don't have any identification info for the two east coast cars.

And I have to correct an error in my post. The M/T car is a genuine KK Boss '9 . It is well known and the number is one of the earliest. My apologies if I misled anyone .

I went to Lyons drag strip  when pro stock first got started and Ed Terry shows up with a ford drag team transporter with several cars. I think one was a BOSS 429 mustang for pro stock. The Dyno man shows up with a beater ramp truck and the seven day wonder maverick  on the back powered by a 427 sohc. He was the only ford guy to successfully run the cammer in pro stock.  Butch Leal was at the top of his game at the time. For sure the fastest mopar pro stocker on the west coast. The dyno man put Butch Leal on the trailer 2 out of three. 8)
