New personal best
« on: November 08, 2009, 02:37:18 pm »
I have been running my R code drag pack coupe a bunch lately to try to get it into the 12.30's in pure stock trim.I got a 12.43 at 109.8 a week ago with a 1.82 60 ft time on a humid for the season night.Last sunday i went a 12.47 at 109.5 with a 1.89 60 ft .Usualy any time picked up in the 60 ft is doubled in the et .The track was not real good it was a cool day and the bite was iffy.  Yesturday I went to Muncie my local favourite track.65 degrees but a steady 25 mph headwind all day.I had jetted the primarys up to 68 and the rears were already 3 sizes up at 81 .I got a pair of 12.50 passes and finaly a 12.46 at 108.8 mph it also went a 1.79 60 ft time. That without the head wind should have been a low 12.30 something pass.On that pass I finaly remembered to look at the AF meter and it was 14.5 way lean 12.5 is about right. It time to jet the primarys up a couple more sizes and hopefully get out to a nice sun warmed track at least one more time this year .I know on a descent conditioned day it will go very low 12.30's maybee even a 12.20 something .Guess I beter take off the repo 2 1/4 70 style Mustang exhuast and invest in a 2 1/2 inch mandrell bent free flowing system, getting a new set of tires instead of the 4 year old ones .2010 will be a fun year with my coupe. http://artactiongraphics.com/Track-photos/US41/11-01-09/IMG_3022.jpg

Yes it has the same 4.11 posi.shift at 5800 rpm go through the traps at 6200rpm.40 degres total timing ,might try up a couple and down a couple to see what works best.Lots of things to tweak but a real good starting point .I know its got a low 12.30 something or high 12.20 in it yet it track conditions alow it .Steve

Steve, are you using an O2 sensor (with a bung in the H pipe?) with an in-car readout?  Have you found that to be pretty accurate?  Do you recall the manufacturer/source for that setup?

Guess I beter take off the repo 2 1/4 70 style Mustang exhuast...

Are you currently using the 2 1/4 repro mufflers too, or something better?

The AF meter is a cheap one I do not remember the brand off hand,it does have a sensor bung in the pipe.I am not realy sure how accurate it is.The LM1 in my Fairlane is much better. The h pipe and everything but the Hooker areochamber mufflers are the repro 70 style exhuast. Its got a bunch more in it.I jetted the front up to 70 size jets today and raised the float level a bit on Barrie Pooles advice. He built the short block and got me the better valve springs. He is a great source of info and help.Steve

Sorry it took so long the AF meter is a K&N set up.I dont know how accrurate it is but it showed lean and it seems pluasible in descent air this time of year and jetted only a few jet sizes up from stock. The Fairlane torque converter is out to get fixed and hopefully it will get back and still get some passes before the end of the year.Steve

Ditto here! Hope to see one of the F.A.S.T. races next year with my brother. We have been wanting to go for years, time to plan!

What would be the best one to go to if I can only see one?

I'm working on the Black Magic car digging out the engine parts to go to the machine shop, getting a toploader soon...

I ran at Muncie In on saturday and relowered my personal best to 12.42 there was a 15-20 mph headwind again so the mph was only 108.49 .On that run I lowered my tire pressure to 30 lbs and recorded a 1.77 60 ft time.I finaly jetted it up more but the conditions just wouldn't net me a much sought after 12.30 something. http://artactiongraphics.com/Track-photos/US41/11-01-09/IMG_3022.jpg

That is super impressive on those tires and rims.  You really have the car and your launch technique dialed in.

Here is a video link of a good pass even though it blew the head gasket at the 1000 ft mark. It has at least 3-4 tenths still in it http://www.youtube.com/user/PureStockDrags#p/u/11/peRmvJ7JCNw

Glad to read that your running your car.  Curious about the 60 ft. time.  Your running 4:11's and a close ratio trans?  What gear are you in at 60 feet and what are the rpm's?  At the end of the quarter mile and at 112 mph. what are the rpm"s?  I'm in San Diego, we have NO quarter mile tracks.  We do have two eigth mile tracks and I've been thinking about giving it a try.  I got my 69 a few months back and have been working on it ever since. I replaced the destroyed 4:11's with a 3:25 posi and am running the stock close ratio trans.  I don't know much about the motor, pistons, cam or valves, do know, CJ crank, rods and flywheel.  Solid lifter valve train on stock C80E-N heads and a 750 cfm Holley. Motor runs fine and seems to have plenty of power, gearing might be a problem  Thanks,  Brian

My car has a C6 in it.Its best mph is 110.8 at arround 6200 rpm in the traps. The best 1/8 mile time was 7.90 at 87 mph.I think a 3.25 gear may not be a good drag gear a 3.50 to 3.91 would be much better.Even with a lass than best gear you can still have a blast at the track.Less gear means less torque and possiby a bit easier launch but a bit less potential,Enjoy it thats what there for.Steve

Gotta be screaming at 6200 rpm's.  Thanks for the 1/8 mile time and speed.  Something to shoot for.  I knew that 3:25 rear-end would hurt me on the low end.  Thanks,  Brian.

I went out today and ran within a hundreth of my best but did it in 86 degree  88% humidity When I ran the 12.42 it was a November day 60 degrees no humidity .It is so hard this time of year to get the engine cooled down between runs,I know that is hurting things also .A 12.43 in the heat should get me in the 12.20's this fall in better air.I am  getting ready to have the trans gone through have the converter tightened up.Maybe a 12.20 something may happen before the temps get better. ;D

Hi Steve,
I'm planning on being there (Stanton) with Wayne. I think he's going to be driving a (cough! cough!) Corvette this year. I was hoping to have my 69 SCJ Cyclone done by then but it's not going to happen! Can't wait to see your coupe scream down the track.

Your car is even more impressive when you compare it to my 10 second, 10" Goodyear slick car's best 60' of 1.47. My 60' with a G70-14 would be 2.00 for sure , there is NO WAY I could get it to hook like yours. NICE job !!!!

Interesting read.  I ran my firebird in the pure stock drags in the mid 90's a couple times, back before all the F.A.S.T. stuff started.
I had a ball trying to hook with F70-14's.  It would 60 foot in the upper 1.80's without any suspension mods at all.  It just worked, but since it was unrestored everything was a little loose ;D   I still have the car but haven't raced it in a few years now.  I kind of got away from it when there were very few true pure stock cars actually running.  But it's kindled my interest again.

This is kind of the direction I'd like to go with the SCJ now.  But I'm thinking of stretching the rules a bit now.  Seems you are doing the same, with roller rockers and talk of restalling the converter.

I'm surprised you are still running the 2 1/4 exhaust system.  Back then they allowed up to 2 1/2 inch as long as it resembled the stock configuration, because I upgraded the bird at that time.
   Has that since changed?

I don't have roller rockers or even adjustables.I want to tighen up the converter for less slipage and more MPH .I have a 2 1/2 inch X pipe exhuast on it now the only change from last year beside oil and spark plugs. You really can't use much stall speed on the Polyglass tires and hook.I leave the line at 1100 to 1200 rpm and pedal it out.You got to get a feel for it and roll into full thotle as quick as possible.I have my car dialed in anybody can do it with so time and practice anybody that wants a hand I will try and help.

That's cool.  There was a previous post, we talked and I thought you mentioned you were running Erson rollers, because I was looking for a supplier.
Ya polyglass tires are tricky.  I always came out just off idle, but I was only running 3.31 gears and a tight 1600 stall converter.  So it wasn't that bad.

I'm wanting to do this with my SCJ now.  Since I have to build the motor anyway, I thought I'd tinker inside.  Not really interested in falling within the rules, I just want to see how fast it'll go on polyglass tires.  I just have to find a good machinest.

Where did you get the Xpipe system?  I see that Pypes makes one, but it used 1970 style mufflers.

Ah, I wasn't aware you were talking about another car, that would explain the rocker mixup then  ;D   I'm in Prescott Arizona.

I use the Pypes setup with the transverse muffler on my 71 ventura and it was excellent fit on that particular car.  I haven't tried it on anything else though.

I guess you are using a dual muffler 1970 style system then,,,as far as I can tell that's all that Pypes makes for the stangs.
That's where I'm at a crossroads right now.  I plan to keep the car true to form and correct, but I want it to run hard. I know the stock 69 CJ system will kill HP.  I'm at the point that if Pypes or another company made a nice X-pipe system with the factory style transverse muffler I'd probably go that route, so as not to stray too far from the original design so to speak.  But I don't know of one.

I have a feeling you and I will have alot to talk about when I get going on this.  Just something about stock appearing cars on little polyglass tires going fast that really does it for me  ;D  Who knows, when I get this done, maybe I'll bring the bird back and let my wife drive it while I pilot the stang.

Sounds doable.  Maybe the Xpipe front section, with the dynomax muffler and fab the rest.  I have a fairly well equipped shop here, so it's not an issue.  I'll have to figure it out when I get to that point.

Right now I'm just worried about a machinest.  I pretty much know what I want to do with the motor, I just don't know who to trust with it.  Mine is a C6 as well with 3.91's. I figure it's a pretty decent combination for what I want to do.  I'll keep the stock stall, of which I have no idea where it might flash, it's been parked since about 85?  So I don't remember.

Anyway, congrats on the ET and keep it up.

69mustangSCJ,
Kip Martin is "down the hill" in the Phoenix area. He's built many NHRA record holding 428's for Stock Eliminator. He has a LOW 10 second '64 Mustang with a 289 now. I'm sure he could help you. let me know and I'll get you contact info.

No kidding??  Let me guess, the car is black??  I think I've talked to him before at some of the Nostalgia meets at Speedworld.  Little 289 4 speed car still running the little (450 cfm???) autolite carb per NHRA Stock rules.  At the time I wasn't interested in getting this SCJ running.  I was just more interested in hearing him talk about that little stang.  Nothing I like more than NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminator racing.  It has to be the same guy, because I just don't remember seeing any other Stock Eliminator 289 stangs around here.
I don't know how to get ahold of him however, if you could PM me info that would be great.  Thanks, Larry.

    Larry ,
That is Kip. Before Kip relocated to AZ he lived in Kansas and was responsible for some of the fastest CJs in the country. I'll get his number and PM it to you.

Sounds great, I figured that was him.  I highly doubt he would remember me, he probably gets alot of people asking questions about his car.
Is he getting his work done from a local shop or does he have his own machine shop?  Thanks again Randy.  Cheers, Larry.

Thanks Randy, at the very least I'm sure he could clerify some of the ideas rolling around in my head.
There is a meet at Speedworld coming up Sept 2nd through the 4th called Arizona Fuel and Gas Nationals.  Gassers and Nostalgia stuff, maybe he will be there?
If not the next Southwest Nostalgia Drags isn't until November 14th, quite a ways off. If he has his own shop and he were interested, I'd just shoot down the hill and stop in.
   Larry.

Thanks Steve for sharing all the things your doing to your car.  Your last personal best 12.43 and 109 was surprising enough.  Your new best is still on poly glass?  I thought I was pushing the envelope at 34 degrees actual so I guess there's still room.  Next time I have some money its gotta be for tires and then back to San Diego 1/8 mile track. Just like to get in to the 9's somewhere.  Keep it up and keep us posted.  Brian

Your car is even more impressive when you compare it to my 10 second, 10" Goodyear slick car's best 60' of 1.47. My 60' with a G70-14 would be 2.00 for sure , there is NO WAY I could get it to hook like yours. NICE job !!!!

My 67 FAST Fairlane has run several even better 1.60 sixty foot times on repo G 70-15 red line tires and has run 11.17 at 121 mph.It pulls the front tire 6 inches in the air when it launches. It should run 10.70s but its been giving me fits for over a year.Head porter got into a intake water jacket on the one head and it keeps leaking.$3,000 to get the heads done and nothing but troubles. Its apart again time to switch cams to a more radical cam and try a single fout intake with a bigger carb.I want to see it run a ten real bad.
