1970 Race car
« on: April 16, 2011, 09:43:23 am »
You good folks have an old race hand as a member, but he has yet to post.
Thought I'd post up a bunch of pictures for him and get him to tell the stories for you.
I'll start 3-4 topics.
This first one is of a car he had, a 1970 Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ.

This car I bought from Bruce Fitzgibbon in the spring of 1971.He and Gary Smith raced it out of Seaway Motors in 1970.Bruce joined up with the Ford car clinic that year and Gary drove the car locally while Bruce was away, near as I can remember.I bought this 60 Ford ramp truck from Vanstone&Lawler to haul this car, and Bruce bought the clinic Cougar that he was driving for Ford and we travelled around with the two Cougars.I missed a lot of weekends at Georgetown which was the closest track to Whitby where the dealership was where Bruce worked.I came in 9th in points that year.I drove this car in the NHRA  Grandnationals in 71 which was the first NHRA National event in Canada, held in San Air near Montreal Quebec.Out of over 100 stock eliminator cars trying to qualify,I qualified 16th for a 32 car field.Ran a best of 12:04 on a 12:10 national record, and 116:+mph on a 115:+mph record.I was eliminated in the third round by Scobie & Swicks 69 Mustang Cobra Jet coupe.you will see this blue car in some other pics posted here by my brother.Bruce bought the Mustang, and raced it in Super Stock in the following years with great success, winning the points championship in 73 at Georgetown.

Beauty eh?  ( Candaian humor I hope) LOL Nice car and great story. We here in the states missed out on seeing a lot of the cool cars from Canada. US magazines rarely covered any of them except the Sandy Elloitt stuff. They were great but here's a perfect example of a great car most of us never knew about. Thanks for posting.

It is pretty neat to go back through my SSDI magazines and see the different cars and yes, the Sandy Elliot cars go much coverage. I did find a great issue of SSDI that hadan article with the Ford of Canada Drag Team cars and rig. Pretty impressive setup I have to admit. One I would like to see more of is the Polaris Drag Team 70 Mustang coupe and that rig. I have just seen one color pic of the car and a small black and white pic of the whole rig winning best appearing awards at some race I don't remember where. Anyone have pics of that car??

The clinic Cougar, shown back with my old Cougar" as the car looks now",showed up resored at a Toronto car show a few years ago.You will see it on the top of the clinic trailer,It is also in the black and white picture of the team,on the right with Bruce Fitzbibbon standing beside the car.As I mentioned before,Bruce bought and raced the car in 71.A guy named Dieter Scharschmidt street raced the car with a 351 in it I believe,in Toronto.I have an article from The City magazine, from Sept.30/1979,a Toronto Star newspaper Sunday pullout, with an article about the street racing scene. If I can figure out how,I will post some pics of that article, but not tonight.

Posting pictures for brother Bob.
If the writing is too small to read you have two options (that I can think of) one is to "save as" and then when on your computer when opened click "view" (top left of screen) and choose "zoom". You can or should be able to expand it. (just found out the zoom works on these pages as well)
Second way is for me to e-mail them to you.

I can remember seeing the clinic at the U.S. Nationals in 1970. I have some pictures buried somewhere, i will see if I can find them. Some years later the Clinic rig showed up at a truck repair shop less than a mile from Indianapolis Raceway Park. It sat behind the shop for years, I thought it was neat to see it but never ask anybody at the shop about it. It was just another interesting piece of Ford racing history, kinda big to collect though ! Drove by one day and it was gone.
