Got my car out today
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:26:52 pm »
After last falls engine carnage we put the old shortblock with factory style pistons Ford steel head gaskets to get the compresion up a bit new max effort pure stock cam .Had some trans issues and haven't made it to the track untill today.Drove the car with it shifting right for the first time thursday.Checked things over like the secondaries to make sure they were still working.
The car dose not have the same bottom end punch that it had last year but seamed to pull very hard after 4000 rpm up to the shift point.Filled it up with fresh 112 fuel the old fuel was a year old.I did not drive the car again until the track at Morocco In today.Got teched warmed it up a bit and went to make a pass.Knowing the low end power was toned down I decided to get agressive on the launch knowing the track usualy hocks hard .Warmed the tires up real well staged and hit it hard and it took well .Shifted and made the pass .Now the car just would not pull like it had on my road at higher rpm .Got the time slip 12.85 103.35 a disapointment looked at the 60ft and it was a 1.575 two tenths quicker 60 ft than it had ever gone before.
I let it cool good and made another pass hit it harder it spun and went a 1.85 60 ft and a 13.25 103  .Now it has gone 12.42 before with 110.8 with a 1.80 60 ft time so Im disapointed somewhat. But the battery charger on cool it down well and try a bit softer luanch go a 12.94 104  with a 1.74  60 ft.
I am starting to think the new fuel is not working out.Mph in the 1/8 mile is off 6-7 mph and 6-7 off in the 1/4 compared to past runs but the way it pulled I hoped to go at least 112 -114 in good conditions.
The dist hasn't moved so i will check filters ,change the coil , drain and get new fuel and try to get that hard 4000 up pull back.I want to see a low 12 maybee under the right conditions 11.99 or bit lower pass it 60 fts good enough to run that fast.I will make one change at a time and first being fuel. The G-70 Polyglass are working well at least :D

Keep us posted.. I miss having KCIR and my grudge nights on Wed.
What is the story on the fuel? Not liking the race gas choice? I read that you filled with fresh..

Had 110 in it last year but had a bit more compress with flat tops .They only had 100   or 112 so I went with the 112 .Maybee it was old I dont know .I will go somewhere else and get 100 to 108 .I think that is it the only change made .It was a 70 degree day and had a 15 mph tail wind it should have been a good personal best day .

What do you think the compression is now? I'm thinking the same as Cjjeff.

I would run Ethanol free 93 and listen for detonation. Adjust Dist as needed.

I can hardly believe you ran a 1.575 on G70s! Thumbs Up!

The 1.57 shocked me to but the track was working as usual .It was a nearly unrepeatable pass that may never happen again.I hopr the photoghrapher got some pics there could be air under the left front tire.

I don't know, that 1.575 sounds a bit like a suspect 60 ft time.  It happens.

In my own experience I've never had gasoline have much of an effect on performance, it either detonates from inadequate octane in high gear, or it doesn't...but I've never run any really old gas though.  I'd put a light on it and see that the timing is doing what you think it's doing, double check for floats set high enough and for full throttle, put a vacuum gage on it and look for something obvious.

Be sure to let us know what you find...

I checked things today and found the #1 plug wire was barely on the plug #4 was not pushed on fully checking the rest #7 was barely on the plug also .I suspect a local pulled the plug wire off the #1 maybee #4 (long story). Will be checking the video at the resturant tomorrow .Had breakfast sunday morning the only time the car wasnt in my sight he came in after me parked close in a weird way next to the trailer and was acting strange even for him.#7 is a pain to install corectly and I suspect wasn't on from the start.Bought a new long needle nose pliers to help put the boots on better.I will drive it tomorrow but it does sound crisper now .

Drove the car today with all the plug wires on and things are well in CJ land.It pulls very hard again and put down a small patch shifting into 2nd that it did not do before.I hope to go to the Pure Stock Drags this weekend and lower the fastest Ford record but the weather is looking shakey.                    I guess a 12.85 with 2 plugs not getting much spark still isnt bad but I have higher hopes.New spark plugs and a cleanup tonight maybee go to Muncie dragway tomorrow night to test.

That makes sense.  It was probably breaking down just a bit in top gear at maximum load, just enough so as you couldn't feel or hear it.  That would certainly scrub off the top end speed and affect the ET a bit.  It'll be interesting to see if that 1.575 60 ft time can be repeated.

I dont expect to run that 1.57 again well maybee if I pull a couple plug wires off on a great track and everything else goes right :D.It did go a 1.74 later that day after I spun on the previous pass so I went after it softer .I think 1.60's can happen fairly often but that 1.57 may never be beat by me .We will see .

I hope the Pure Stock drags work out for you. It's been a while since there has been a really strong Ford in the field.
