Going back to the track tomorrow. We got the problem figured out I think. When the old motor let go last year it did a bunch of other damage including the dist.We put a diffrent dist in this engine .Well I had Barrie Poole tweak some duraspark  dists for me but it seems this wasnt one of them my mistake. So basicly it was still set up like a mid 70's truck 390.Barrie told me what to do and now the car feels much better from the low end on up.We will see tomorrow

Well so far no good runs.I dont know yet what going on.Wont mph and feels sluggish .Checked float levels both fuel filters(. had one back by the tank also).Checked timing and then changed to a diffrent distributor from my Fairlane.
Looked for a flat spot or damage anywhere on the fuel line .Couldn't drive it to see if anything helped tonight it rained. In the morning or Saturday ,if this dosn't fix it change coils and if that dosn't work change fuel pumps again. If all that dose nothing we will readjust the rockers on the hydraulic cam ans swap on some new plug wires.Maybee a chasis dyno time may be needed to find the issue.
If it feels better I will go to the track on sunday. Sooner or later we will find the issue.

13.25 at 100.45 mph .It has gone a 12.42 at 110.82 before so I am disapointed with these results not the same short block but only real diffrence is maybee a half point of compression less but a better more modern cam now.

Have you always had a filter back at the tank?  Do you use an electric pump back at the tank as a "pusher" against the mechanical pump?  My experience is that mechanical pumps do not like to "pull" against a filter.

The filter has been back there a few years .Never had an electric pump on the car.The good #s it ran were with the filter but I may remove it and see if it helps any.

Changed the dist ,checked float levels ,timing and removed the rear fuel filter still not better.Going to change back to the old fuel pump and try a diffrent coil.Hope that helps

I know it's a pain, but I'd check compression on all 8 cylinders at this point...maybe remove the valve covers and look for an obvious "lift" problem on one or more cylinders as well.

The changes didn't do much maybee a bit with the fuel pump.Next we will check and readjust the valves if that dosn't do it check the cam install degree it .Will look into compression check also.

Went to degree the cam and readjust the valves and noticed one rocker had a lot of play.We pulled the intake and checked the lifter it was toast.pulled the cam #1 intake lobe is a mess. Will order a new cam and oil pump tomorrow and try to get out this year before the track closes.
