If you drop the bolt in crossmember and unbolt the idler arm bracket from the frame rail, you should be able to pull the steering linkage down and have ample room to remove the oil pan.

Your probably right with the neater job dropping the pan. Guess it can be done by dropping the idler, cylinder, & maybe pitman arm?

You can get the pan off by removing the large lower support bracket that runs from side to side and then unbolting the idler arm from the apron. That will allow you to lower the steering linkage out of the way.

I just unbolted the grill center bracket and moved it to the side to change the cam in my 69 left the grill bolted in .
had many 428 CJ and SCJ cars over the last 30 years.I currently own a 68 1/2 coupe and a 69 R code SCJ Coupe and a 70 R code SCJ Cougar Eliminator .I am looking for a 70 428 coupe if anybody knows of one for sale.

That statement really makes me suspect that you have something other than cam selection going on.  I've been around some street cars that were way over-cammed, probably to the point of hurting performance more than helping, but none of them was so unpleasant at idle that someone would contemplate changing the cam for just that reason.  I don't have a strong opinion as to what's going on, but something in that 8V setup would be my first suspicion.  I'd sure hate to change cams before exhausting all other possibilities.

     Good point, any chance that you can get an emission place to sniff the exhaust? Quick easy check to see if the carbs are at fault.

I agree. Would not hurt to investigate further potential problems before tearing into it. I've finally found a local guy that is supposed to be very FE savvy. He's going to do some troubleshooting weekend after next. We'll see what he thinks...
