19681/2 428 cj factory race car - paint
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:03:57 pm »
So now it is time to freshen up the paint job on my cj -how much value does it add if i go back to the factory white? White is not my favorite color but these are rare cars -any thought out there? Color i like or factory???? Code M.     Also does anyone know the factory engine bar color?
thanks Hal

To me it would depend on the race history unless you are going concours. Just my opinion though.

As a guy who restores cars ,it's so much work to take a car apart and do a color change. If you ever decided to sell your car after painting it a non original color and someone interested in it wanted it white again you may end up losing $10000.00 bucks or more. Now if the car was a old race car with some history you may want to preserve that history.Old factory race cars are cool.Good luck deciding. Please ,pictures as you go.Doug

Hal, Welcome back. I think the car deserves the dealer paint scheme it raced out of. Glad to here you are hard at it.

I think I would go as raced also. First option, second would be white as delivered.   I am all for changing a car you own, but this one is hard to say. You have owned it a very long time and have questioned about sending it off to a new caretaker both times .
If I'm here, it means I am mad at all my other cars.

I agree with David!  I would rather see the "as raced" paint scheme; that is the beginning history of the car!  With the history and documentation you have with the car I think replicating the "as raced" paint adds value to the car.

Since everyone has an opinion I'll throw mine out also. You're in a spot, albeit a good spot. A 135 car has a lot of value so I think that you only have 2 viable options. Go with either the original or the "as raced" paint scheme if you can get good details of how that was. Realise that it is a valuable historical car & I suspect any restoration route other than those 2 would decrease its value to you and to the hobby. JMHO Please keep us in mind for pictures and updates and the best of luck to you.

What is it right now?  You state is just needs freshened up. Is it the color you like now?  Or is it the colors as raced?  The only thing better then brand new fresh paint , is an original patina.

I just read your story from Sept 2011 about how you acquired your car-cool story. It's amazing how fate works some times. It was a lot easier to luck into stuff in the 70's & 80's.Doug
PS. I also like the idea of the as raced  look. How many people in the 60's and 70's actually bought a new muscle car and left it stock?I bet not many.

+3 on the war paint!

War paint it...

Ditto on what Chris says...it was the factory racer which sold the cars on Monday

Just like the Boss 302...even  with my Boss 302 not even a Trans Am car..I try to make it look like one with graphics and such...my preference...some don't like it but who cares, graphics, it has the flat hood, and mini lites...and I'm off the the races... :o ;D

has to have the war paint

Restore/or as in race condition.  IMHO is biased because I like the vintage/race cars, be it CJ, or Boss. Not into the MCA stuff. Just me...

good to be back on the forum,   thank you for the support on going back to the factory race war paint - i am excited now. It is now starting to get stripped and going back white. I have sent my sign maker a original picture from day one at the race track and he is going to replicate the labelling.

For the engine bay does anyone know the correct code? i know it was Black but I would like it correct at this point.
thanks for all the help
Hal

Should be a cool car when its done.Hope you can share some pictures. As for the engine compartment-if you can find a PPG dealer that still has some  DDL9423 low gloss black lacquer its a nice match. You have to spray it over DP90LF black epoxy primer though because the lacquer doesn't cover good like the old days. Here is my 68 1/2 when i bought it a few years ago was raced NHRA northeast division called the STONE PONY may go back that way with a NOS 427 sideoiler was originally highland green with saddle interior 3.91 4 speed radio delete.

Sold off the fiberglass front end and tear drop hood and installed NOS ford metal, has a 1968 428CJ in it now but will definitely replace it,had ladder bars, home made roll bar, cool can up front, raced out of englishtown NJ in the early 1970's then parked in a barn then the owner Butch Fenwick passed away in  1985.

Doug, would like to do a street car/drag car style restoration with a 427 with about 600HP,have the sideoiler with a tunnel wedge, hooker headers,etc.. etc..

Car still retain es all it's orig parts like ram air, date coded radiator, orig 3.91 rear with tag still attached, would like to assemble the engine complete with smog and all accessories and put it on a stand.

The body shows 17K rust free miles just had to replace the passenger side door skin because the barn roof leaked on it when it was stored for many years.

Just UN decided on the paint i like highland green but not sure what to do about the race history paint scheme, the past owner was a ammeter if he was a big time racer i believe it would be different.
