Removing e-brake cable from backing plate.
« on: July 08, 2013, 04:09:15 pm »
Was changing out a damaged backing plate on my 69 yesterday, I was having the usual struggle getting the e-brake cable housing undone from the backing plate.  Didn't have enough hands to depress the 4 expanding fingers on the cable housing, when I had a doh! moment and thought, what if I clamped a little hose clamp over the retaining fingers and squeezed them all at once?  Worked like a champ...I can't believe I struggled so much with these over the years when there was such a simple solution!

They actually sell a tool just for removing those cables from the backing plates.  I think NPD carries it in the back of their catalog for about $5.....may be worth checking in to for the few times you need it.

I found using a 1/2 or 9/16 ring spanner (can't remember which one) works pretty good too - pull hard on the cable, wriggle the spanner around and eventually all the tabs pop through and viola!!

I always use a fuel line clamp(small). Slip it on, tighten and slide the cable out.
