1968 R-codes don't have a shaker, but in 1969 and 1970 the shaker was the ram air option.

For 1969-1970, R-codes without a shaker were not R-codes, they were Q-codes (non-ram air).

Sorry but not correct, my 1969 428 Cougar is an R code with ram air and shakers were not an option on the Cougar.

The flapper style top is considered Ram Air on 68 R and 69 R Cougar. The 70 Cougar is the confusing one as they never made an R but you could order the Q with or without Ram Air which again is the flapper with stationary scoop.

It would help if the OP told us if he was asking about a Mustang or some other model.

So you are saying on the Marti at the top left where it says Door Data Plate Information line item R does not say 428 4V CJ Engine Ram Air? under that section it says order type whats under that retail, stock, etc. You need a dlx report to see dealer order stuff

Sounds like a genuine BS story or simply a mistaken individual telling the story. If there is an R in position 5 of the VIN then it had a shaker when new.

Dimsy, I think you're alluding to a "story" that has gone around for years...it goes something like this: Ford ran short of shaker assemblies so in order to ship R codes they shipped a few without the shaker, with customers offered a rebate for the ram air or offered a dealer install of a shaker when they became available.

It seems fairly unlikely that it ever happened that way, given the difficulty/expense of adding a shaker later, and to my knowledge no one has ever provided a shred of proof that it did happen...just a few R code cars missing their shakers years later, which could be for alot of more plausible reasons.  Without documentation and/or compelling, supporting evidence I'm afraid it remains just a "story".  Often, when expensive parts are missing, a claim that the car was built that way isn't far behind.

If you have documentation though, I'm sure people would be interested.
