1970 14x7 Steel Wheel Color?
« on: February 18, 2016, 02:43:56 pm »
I just picked up a set of 5 1970 14x7 steel wheels that I'm going to have media blasted. I haven't quite decided about painting vs. powder coating (thoughts on that?), but I am wondering if the original paint was a semi-gloss black, semi-flat black, satin black, or something else. What color would best match the original paint color?

Not a 14X7, but NOS 14X6 in the 1970 model year date range and I would say it is SG black.

color depends on which wheel & trim ring or full wheelcover option your car was ordered with as the  way I understand it if full wheelcover rim is semi-gloss black  but if just dogdish centercap then body color rims unless rim is 5 sloted kidney bean type then silver or argent paint in 70.

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. These are the type of wheels to be used with a 1970 Mach 1 full wheel cover.

Then black  & I wouldn't powdercoat the wheels as when installing tire & wheelcovers chipping will happen & harder to touch-up than paint if you are going concours route anyway.

I believe in 1970 only the Cobra Jets [maybe some 351's w/competition suspension] used the 14x7 wheels, all the others [6 cyls and 302's] used 14x6.

I thought all 70 Mach1's came with 14x7 wheels, I parted out at least a dozen 70 Mach's in the 80's and the stock wheels were always 14x7's ....  I know my M code car came with 7" rims, I have pic's of it when new...
