HELP PLEASE! Oil Cooler Question
« on: June 27, 2016, 01:32:58 am »
Hello All,
I need help in determining if my car should have an oil cooler.
I have an R code 1969 SCJ mustang sportroof (non mach one)
3.91 V code rear axle
My Marti report states that the drag pack was introduced in February 1969
My vehicle was built Dec 1968.
Previous owner stated it should not have an oil cooler as this was an early non drag pack car.
Others have told me it should have the oil cooler since it is a SCJ
Thoughts???

It should have an oil cooler setup, 2-3 months before yours is where it becomes questionable.

Agree.  And are the cutouts there in the radiator support?

Feb statement on "drag pack" is only due to Ford marketing change planned.    The addition of the oil cooler came when hot weather testing showed the 391/430 cars were having failures due to high eng temps.    This all was happening pretty fast in Aug/Sept.    The tests, the planned fixes/ finding a suitable set up held up some of the early cars BUT by yours was all in place.

Thanks for the responses
So once the oil cooler is in place.
Would it be correct to call my car a SCJ drag pack car?

Strictly speaking, no, since Ford didn't use that term to describe your car's options until February 1969. That's why the Marti reports say what they do about the Drag Pack option. You've got a 3.91 SCJ. I know this is nit-picky, but you did ask about correctness.

To reiterate what the others have said, think of it like this: the term "Drag Pack" was not officially used until Feb 1969.  Your car left the factory with everything that was included in the Drag Pack, but they weren't using that name at that time.  Most folks will not berate you for using Drag Pack to refer to your car - and if they do, now you can clarify your statement with details ;-)

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to purchase the complete oil cooler setup?
Thanks,
