68 428CJ GT sway bar
« on: July 13, 2018, 08:14:26 pm »
My sway bar measures .950 and Im guessing the other .013 above the .937 ( 15/16" ) is mill scale so is the rest of this cars suspension considered a competition suspension or is it a GT suspension with GT spring rates and heavy duty shocks ? The parts web page shows the spacer plates but not diameters or package types.  Also did I read correctly that some 68 cars were ordered with a 428CJ and not the GT equipment group ?

For all but the "135" cars, the GT package was a mandatory option for 1968 1/2 428 CJ Mustangs.

Your car should have the 15/16 front sway bar with the spacer plates (all production 68-1/2 CJ cars had the sway bar spacers).  I though Scott Fuller was reproducing the sway bar spacers, but I don't see them listed on his webpage.

I can't say about the shocks or "competition" suspension, other than I have never seen a 1968 car with it.

The only non-GT Cobra Jet produced in 1968 were the pre-production (December 1967) built cars, that are now referred to as 135 series.  The GT option was mandatory, as were front disc brakes, on the production cars.

Chris, that is what I was always under the impression of but after trying to do my homework on the Factory production statistics page at the bottom 68 fastbacks are listed two ways for manual transmission with GT and without I don't doubt Im reading the info wrong. Danny, NPD sells the spacer they may be getting them from Scott Fuller. I asked about the GT suspension because I was under the impression there is a very big difference between the competition and GT suspension. The cost of the competition package was listed from a window sticker on another site recently and  IIRC it was $388 and I believe the GT package was 150 or 180 it seemed to be a very big difference in cost for the time.

I believe the competition suspension you're referring to was a 1967 only option and it was a considerable step above a GT suspension( adjustable shocks I think, 15 inch wheels, high performance tires, special shifter for the automatic cars like the one used in Shelby's).

FYI the 1967/68  15/16 front sway bar has different bends compared to a 69/70 15/16 bar. The difference is very visible if you know what to look for. The bend difference is seen where the bar goes through the bushing brackets.I will try and post a picture later if some else doesn't do it first.

Just wondering.....    My late 68 390GT has a 15/16" bar, and the same motor mounts and oil pan as a 68 1/2 CJ. I wonder why it didn't need the sway bar spacers and the 428 cars did .....    any ideas ??

Is the 15/16" away bar standard for any 68 GT car.
