69 wiring question
« on: September 14, 2018, 08:58:11 am »
Is there a difference in the engine bay harness between a tach and non-tach car?  I'm guessing yes :(  with my luck

Thanks , Steve

If I recall correctly there are two different part numbers listed in the MPC for 69. One with and one without tach

They are different.  In the alternator wiring area as I recall.

The non tach can be changed to tach. You need the tach alternator pigtail harness and you have to change some pins on the firewall plug. Some splicing is required and the harness will have to be rewrapped.Get both diagrams and study them and you will see where I'm going with this. Not that hard to do.

This was on the assumption that it was a tach car to start with and the OP just needed the engine bay harness.

The alternator wiring,  the headlight harness and the underdash are all unique to a tach vehicle.

Ok, thanks guys,,, guess I'll go looking for a tach engine bay harness. First I'll have to figure out how to tell the difference between the two :)

There is an outfit that restores harnesses and they’ll do the conversion when they restore it.
They are mentioned on here and then you know the harness will be good.
Youu’ll Need the matching dash harness too - so send that in if you need that converted too.

Thanks for the replies.  What features does a tach car engine harness have that a non-tach would not have? I.e. , how can I tell if my harness is for a tach car ?
Thanks

The connector for the alternator harness will have 4 wires/pins on a tach engine bay harness, and the dash tach harness will have a two wire connector (one of which will be the fat pink resistor wire) near the big plug that goes into the cluster.

Thanks !!!  the 4 wire/pin tip is what I needed, that should tell me what I have. I remember that the alternator wiring harness was specific from my CJ Cougar 10 years ago, just couldn't remember how :)
Appreciate the response .
