Recommendation for a wench for open car trailer
« on: October 01, 2018, 09:13:24 am »
I have a open car trailer that I use to tow my Mustangs to shows and I want to add a wench in case I need to pull the car onto the trailer.  What is the minimum size wench that should be used for this??  I don't want to get one too small but don't want an over powered one either. A good medium range one is what I am looking for.

Thanks,

In "my" experience a 3,000 pull would be the minimum and one around 5,000 would be ideal.

LOL, I think you mean a "winch", not a "wench". A wench is something very, very different.

I'm not so sure that a wench couldn't winch a large group of guys around. I just love how flexible & versatile the English language can be.

I have a 3700 pound rated warn winch on my trailer and it has been more than enough. In fact, it will try to pull the car on the trailer with the emergency brake on. Please don’t ask how I learned this.

Yeah most of us have a trailer story...only some are brave enough to speak of it.

After tripping over my winch cable pulling a car up onto the trailer thereby flipping over the side foot hooked and braking my wrist, I would highly suggest the cordless remote control option and staying off the trailing while it's working. :-[

Had a few trailers and remotes and the Superwinch and Warn are the top brands. 2500lb is enough if everything is free and rolling. Ebay and Amazon and Northern Tool are good places to compare brands features and prices among models.

Yup lots more trailer stories too ! lost one completely off the ball going 55 through Stockton once !! Think it is still there off the embankment from 2010

My worthless two cents…
Stay away from the Harbor Freight junk. As Kerry mentioned, Northern Tool sells some good products. Also, its better to be over rated on the winch then under rated. A 5,000 lbs unit would be ideal.
Btw, having a 100 lb wench pulling our cars onto a trailer is every guys dream!  LOL

We have pushed many a car onto cars trailers 2 guys ( younger days) sometimes but 3 mostly . In my pinion a small load winch should work but if
the tires are soft or wheel bearing seized a stronger unit might be needed.

No matter what load capacity you decide on , features we had to have was the power off / power on with a remote control. Cars can get away
from you while back down the ramp and that can be expensive. Just as other members state get a good brand .
