looking for a red 68.5 coupe from the Denver area....
« on: November 30, 2018, 01:46:08 pm »
A friend who isn't a member here used to own a red 68.5 coupe in Colorado he used to drag ace it and is looking to track it down . It had a white C stripe and was originally an automatic but he put in a 4 speed.
     Any leads will be appreciated.

Randy,
A real low mile red car that was restored by Bob Perkins was at BJ auction a few years ago. It was auto trans and 4.30 gears.

      Yes Bob ,
I was talking to Scott last week and he asked me to reach out to ''our community" and see if it is still out there. That's the reason for my post.

Dana Vedoorn had it after Scott then Jerry Dick got it after Dana. Story from Jerry was, he sold it to another guy in his area of PA and that guy turned it into a Super Gas race car by cutting everything out of it and just using the main shell. Jerry got a little worked up every time it was brought up.

   Thanks Bob,
I'll pass it on to Scott unless you get with him first. Sad news to lose such a significant car to the cutting torch.

Why on earth would someone do that? Buy a 6 banger for a project like that. Geez.

Sadly Grant it happened allot before the cars gained recognition 20+ years ago.

If I'm remember the name correctly. Didn't Scott Main race a cleveland powered red Mustang in the 71/72 body style?

I talked to Scott on Friday in Indy ( PRI trade show) . He still has a "mild" interest in getting the car back. So if anyone has a clue as to it's whereabouts , please post here or contact Scott direct at MPG Head Service/ Cam Research in Colorado.
Thanks to all that responded.  Grant I don't remember the Cleveland powered car but that doesn't mean he didn't have one I would have asked if I had read this before I left and will ask the next time we talk.

Randy, 35+ year old memories are fickle. I could very easily have the name mixed up. My memories are based on what I read in the mags & perhaps National Dragster.
I thought that later on I saw a short story or advertisement that he was porting heads. Then cutting the head into 4 pieces to sell as templates for home porters. I thought that it was a great idea back then.
The gist of the cleveland story was that the cylinder walls on his block were too thin. Had cylinders collapse a couple of times at the track. Block ended up with a lot of sleeves, maybe all 8.
I would of thought that Ford learned a lesson from the 427 cylinders. That always puzzled me on why the 429/460 blocks were quite thick walled in comparison.

    Grant,
Last week at the PRI show I asked one particular retired ford engineer about the "core shift dilema" and he replied that the "gating" ( where the iron entered the mold and how the core was designed led to the problem. Since Ford didn't sonic check them there were problems with "race engines" but most passenger car stuff was OK until a rebuild was needed. by then the warranty was over  and they didn't care. 429-460 was a whole different designer as far a s the core patterns were.

That brings a grin to my face. "Just get us past the warranty period."
One of the more frustrating aspects of my old job. I kept pushing for just a few changes that I felt would benefit our products life span. I couldn't sell it to no-one. In particular I advocated copying some Douglas life extending processes on a Lockheed set of landing gear. Douglas was getting somewhere around 10 years out of a set of gear. The Lockheed gear was lasting around 2 years.
