1969-1970 A/C Case Mounting Washers?
« on: December 03, 2018, 07:18:09 pm »
Marcus recently asked me a question about a pair of washers that were used to secure the heater-evaporator case to the firewall on 1969 and 1970 Mustangs (picture attached). I don't have these washers on my now-air-conditioned car, but that's because my car wasn't originally equipped with factory air and I never saw these things in any of my reference manuals and they don't come with the associated AMK hardware kit. I'm trying to see if anyone that has a car with a/c can get some measurements for me - what's the outside diameter, inside diameter, and thickness of the washer? Info on the original finish would help Marcus, too.

If you look in that area on my 70 Cougar XR-7(small block) factory A/C you will see that washer is there.

This will be the same Small block or Big Block Dearborn built. I can not say what a San Jose or Metuchen built Mustangs.

Is there any chance you can get measurements? Finish?

If I can get a few minutes in the shop I'll see what I can do. It is possible I may have an extra one. But I will not have time until Thursday or so to look. I'll keep an eye on here to see if John get's you measurements.

Hi Scott, I meant to measure the other day.
1970 428 Dearborn, 2 and 1/4 in diameter.  Looks like oil and phosphate.   I couldn't remove them to measure the diameter of the bolt hole or the thickness.  Quite thin, 7/16 nut on it, but with like a built in washer on it, all one piece.  Like a body nut.
1969, 302 car out of NJ.  Same size, but black undercoating on some of it and black paint also.

Not sure which finish was "factory".

Hi Scott, Just pulled one off to measure for you,

The washer is 2 1/4" in diameter (2.250") with a 5/16" hole in the center ( measures slightly larger at 0.316" )  Thickness is right around 0.067"  (It varies a little as there's some corrosion on the outside face) Finish appears to be phosphate and oil (grey) and the washer appears flat ....

If it matters, the car is a 9/30/69 built Metuchen Mach1 with factory AC .....

If you need some pic's let me know and I'll attach some

John

...and of course these appear to be an odd size that isn't generally available. I see a washer in the Osborn assembly manual with an engineering number of C9ZA-19C624-A, but the drawing is very light and I can't see where the washer appears. I also can't find a cross-reference for this engineering number to a service part number. I could have some custom made, but I'd need to make a lot more than two of them and I doubt there's much of a market to justify the production costs. Oh, well - thanks for the info, guys.

I've been able to confirm that these are the C9ZA-19C624-A washers described in the Osborn manual, and I've been able to confirm the dimensions and original finish. I'm going to reproduce them and sell them through my Muscle Car Research store.
