Dirty 68
« on: December 11, 2018, 04:31:01 pm »
I was trolling through the MSN Auto Classics page of the Mustang assembly line photos and this picture of the nasty 1968 puzzled me.Could this possibly be picture POST STRIKE?
I am currently Cobra Jet-less.

I would say it's probably Post strike. What is interesting about the photo though is that car is not a GT yet it has a two-tone Grill. It was my understanding that GT models got the two tone Grill and standard Mustangs did not. Any thoughts?

+1

There's a worker in a pit under the car making the adjustments as the machine spins the wheels. they still did it this way in the mid 1980's when I toured several car plants during college ….

I bought a C8ZZ-A NOS Grill about 10 years ago as a back up for my dads CJ.  It did not have the light bars attached, but it was already painted where the large corral goes and not painted where the small one is.  It was an older dated box and probably still have it.

Looks like wipers and headlights installed and/or adjusted in this station as well.  Car behind is pretty dusty too.  And what's with the bicycle on the left side of the car?

Pretty common sight in large plants. Quick way to fetch parts or let someone zip off for a break. Supervisors/inspectors use them to move around on the plant floor. Time is money so they say. Ours were 3 wheeled, had a package tray over the back axle for parts or tools.

My dad worked from 1950-1980 at the Cincinnati Parts Depot that Ford had. Closed that facility in 1988. He was a U.A.W. member and I remember that 1967 strike. Dad received $20 a week from the U.A.W. during the strike. We didn't go hungry but no new shoes or pants were bought at our house. My dad was stopped for speeding by one of our hometown cops during the strike. The officer asked Dad where did he work and when Dad answered Ford the officer said you're on strike and couldn't afford the ticket if I wrote one. Slow down and good luck. The dust on that car is 68 days worth.   Dave R.

Solid detective work Dave!

I blew up the picture and there appears to be a looped hood pin cable behind the grille on the drivers side.

Good eye Ken. Or is it a horn harness? Tough to tell. I would have thought the hood would have the pin plates installed by this point but hey, it's post strike so who knows what could be happening on the assembly line.  We need to chat on the phone soon.   Dave R.
