Original bumper or not??
« on: February 11, 2019, 10:22:01 am »
This past weekend I pulled the rear bumper off my 70 Mach 1 to have it re-chromed.  There was a paper tag still adhered to the inside of the bumper that had FoMoCo trademark and the Ford part number for the bumper.  Would this have been assembly line or a service replacement?? The car was purchased used in 1976 and parked in 1978, I do not know much about the history of the car before that, but it doesn't appear to have any body damage.  I couldn't find any date codes, as there was some minor pitting.

Service part but good one to chrome if not pitted because it will have the correct curve.

Kerry, does a Ford service bumper have lesser finish than an assembly line part ?

I have had a few of the White sticker Blue Stencil service bumpers. Some had dates into the presumed 80's. The Chrome on the inside was horrible on all of them with flaking and checkerboard pattern. My original line bumpers have rust on the inside and lots of areas where there was no Chrome inside originally. Would want to get others opinions to compare on this topic. Getting parts Chromed, Polished and Anodized correctly today is a PITA. They over do it !

I was thinking the same thing the one I have has this sticker on it presumably an 80's purchase and the chrome is excellent but has a similar underside  description as yours Kerry.

My sticker was about 1" x 4" and had the small FoMoCo logo in upper right corner, and the C9 part # in large black letters. Away from the car at the moment but post a picture when I can.

Chris it looks like yours has been out of the weather ! I tried taking a pic of the chrome on the part I have and it doesn't translate well on a phone camera so is the quality of original chrome in the eye of the beholder (Judge) ?

I was lucky to find a pair that were still in the original wrappers.

I did notice that the chrome plating seems to be a more blue tint than either repro or show chrome.

I have 2 sets of ford bumpers ordered in 1984 , the have the tags like Chris posted. I finally unwrapped one in the 1990's and the finish is terrible, There's visible grinder marks under the chrome and the chrome is flaking on the backside. If I ever use them, I'll have them rechromed …

The moral of the story, don't spend $$$ on NOS bumpers unless you unwrap and look at them good …

+1

I was lucky to find a pair that were in good condition. Just had to remove the protective coating with paint thinner first.

I have a Ford replacement bumper from around 1976 on my 65 coupe, the quality of the chrome is horrendous compared to the original damaged one I replaced. The reproductions now have much nicer chrome than that one does.

Yes, the finish is better. Dimensionally they are not the same.
